The Planning Board, appointed by the Board of Selectmen, is comprised of 5 members, one of whom is elected as Chairman.

The primary goal of the Planning Board is to protect and preserve the character and the quality of life that defines Belmont. The Board addresses issues that may affect the future of Belmont. These may include re-zoning proposals, new land-use patterns, traffic concerns, and specific development proposals. The Board is responsible for holding public hearings for all proposed zoning amendments and applications filed under the Design & Site Plan Review Zoning By-Law. They operate in unison with the Zoning Board of Appeals and often hold joint public hearings on applications.  The Planning Board makes interpretations of the Zoning By-Law at the request of the Building Commissioner.

Projects which the Planning Board have been significantly involved with include drafting the McLean and Alewife (a/k/a Belmont Uplands) Zoning By-Laws and subsequent approvals for the three McLean Hospital Redevelopment projects.  Currently the Board is implementing the recommendations of the Trapelo Road/Belmont Street Corridor Study.

The Board commonly meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. The meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Town Hall, Selectmen's Meeting Room (455 Concord Avenue) although it is recommended that the town's web site be checked to confirm the date and time. All meetings are open to the public unless otherwise posted.
